About Lacrosse Central

Lacrosse Central is home to two teams: the Angels and the Valkyries. The Angels have been part of the Auckland lacrosse scene since the inaugural season in 2001/2002. The team's first ever win did not come until the final game of the first season. Since then the Angels have taken flight, finishing third the next year, narrowly missing out on the finals in 2003/2004, and winning in commanding fashion the following year under the guidance of coach Jakub Mikosa. In this 2004/2005 season the Angels were undefeated: the first and only team in the league to achieve this feat. Reflecting this achievement, seven club members were included in the first New Zealand women's lacrosse team to play at the 2005 World Cup in Annapolis. The Angels have continued to have a strong presence in the national team and continued to be a dominant force in the Auckland League finishing second in 2005/2006 and regaining the title last season.

The fledgling side at Lacrosse Central is the Valkyries who entered the competition in 2004/2005. Taken under the wing of the Angels, the Valkyries were quick to pick up on the traditions of the club by enjoying the game as much off the field as on the field. Hula skirts, funny hair and war paint are not an uncommon sight at Lacrosse Central! This club attitude was recognized with team spirit awards to the Angels in 2001/2002 and the Valkyries in 2005/2006.

Until recently, the club has been affiliated with Auckland University. The campus has provided a successful recruiting ground for new players and overseas players temporarily calling New Zealand home. In 2005, the club moved away from its "Varsity" roots and was renamed Lacrosse Central. This coincided with the move to Grammar Carlton Rugby Club where the teams have been based for the past two seasons. The home grounds and club name may have changed over the years but a constant at this dynamic club is our fun-loving yet fighting spirit.
