BLAX HEADED TO THE DOWN UNDER CUP

9 May, 2007

The NZ Womens Lacrosse development team, otherwise known as the Blax, head to Melbourne to compete in the Down Under Cup from 1st-5th June. This was the first international tournament in which the Blax team ever competed, travelling to Melbourne in 2003 for what was a steep learning curve.

This year’s team, with considerably more international experience under their belts, hopes to use this tournament to launch their World Cup campaign for 2009. With seven of the players who competed at the 2005 World Cup in Annapolis remaining in the team, and the addition of the NZ Under19 goalkeeper and two players who have played in the United States college system, the side hopes to compete well against the teams from the USA, Australia and Japan.

“This is an exciting time for New Zealand Lacrosse” says NZWLA President Rosie Gunn “As well as the players going to the Down Under Cup, we have the NZ Under 19 team competing in the Under 19 World Champs in August, many of whom will step up to the senior team after that tournament. In addition, many of the World Cup players from 2005 who have been unavailable for this tour are expected back in the framework of New Zealand Lacrosse in the future”
