PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE WOMENS LEAGUE 31 July , 2007
With only one month left until spring, the 2007/2008 lacrosse season approaches - a busy time for the NZWLA bees. Several changes have been proposed for the League for the upcoming season. Firstly, a change in game days from Sunday to Saturday afternoons. Depending on number of teams entered, games would start around 12pm. Another change put forward to the committee is the idea of playing the majority of League games at one central location. Finally, we hope to align the men and womens leagues - something that has often been discussed in previous years but was never successful. Mens and womens games will be played side-by-side, with the aims of heightening interest in lacrosse, encouraging social aspects, drawing crowds - and providing more support from the sidelines! Please email your club rep with your views on these topics. And get ready for a great season!

The Auckland Secondary Schools girl’s league is currently running and is due to finish on 26 July. Over the past years since lacrosse has been introduced to New Zealand the schools league has continually grown and become more and more popular. The Auckland Secondary schools league currently boasts 18 teams made up by 11 schools and is divided into three divisions. The schools currently involved are Auckland Girls Grammar, Avondale College, Diocesan, Epsom Girls Grammar, Mt Albert Grammar, Pinehurst, St Dominic’s College, St Marys College, Western Springs College, Westlake Girls and Whangaparoa College. Games run weekly after school on Thursdays. The teams from the schools league can then go on to play in the Auckland Secondary schools lacrosse championships being held this year on August 10. Any other Auckland school is also welcome to enter into this event even if they haven’t participated in the schools league. The other championship event that any Secondary school team can enter into is the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship. This is also being held on August 10 this year. In past years Whangarei Girls High School and Rodney College have participated in this event and there is increasing interest with teams in Wellington and Christchurch starting to pick up lacrosse. For more information please contact Natalie Turner by email.

I haven’t been in Edinburgh long, but the trainings and games I have taken part in have been brilliant. I have to say the style of play over here isn’t dissimilar to that in New Zealand, although it tends to be a little more “physical” at home. I found I could understand the style of the game with no problems. If anything at home we focus more on set plays and structured combinations at training, as opposed to just playing and seeing what we can create. Defensively we are more aggressive in NZ – and by aggressive I mean that I usually come away from a weekend game with a few bruises…as a defence player you seem to be able to get away with a lot more at home. With regard to attack the focus seems to be the same…moving, moving, moving….picks, snappy effective cutting, working the ball around and letting it do the work, drawing double teams and using the free player, and of course, exciting fast-break situations. Playing against the U19 squad out at Musselburgh was an experience – after dealing with the fact that I had chosen to play lacrosse in potentially the coldest location possible (and I didn’t have tights, not a fan), I then saw the army of 35 U19 players – who were to face our team of 14. 23 subs vs. our pitiful 2…I didn’t like the odds. But the game was very competitive and so much fun to be a part of. I think the Scotland U19 Squad is doing fantastically, they certainly have a very strong base to build on and some very talented players – I wish them well with their preparation for Canada in 2007. I would like to thank the members of Edinburgh Thistle for welcoming me into their club, esp. Emily, Claudia, Cosh, and Fiona. It’s been a short, but wonderful experience and I am so glad I came to Edinburgh. I’d also like to use this opportunity to invite all lacrosse players in Scotland to come and play in Auckland, New Zealand. We have an established league set up which runs from October until the end of March (we play in our summer), with men’s and women’s clubs all over Auckland. Coaching opportunities are also available, and we can assist you with information on getting accommodation and employment too – please email me if you are interested annastrand26@hotmail.com You are all so welcome, we would love some of you to come over for a season and I can promise that you will love New Zealand! Oh, I should say in case you weren’t sure, that I was joking about the sheep/cows/kiwifruit etc. And you won’t need to bring your tights. Anna Strand

BLAX HEADED TO THE DOWN UNDER CUP 9 May, 2007
The NZ Womens Lacrosse development team, otherwise known as the Blax, head to Melbourne to compete in the Down Under Cup from 1st-5th June. This was the first international tournament in which the Blax team ever competed, travelling to Melbourne in 2003 for what was a steep learning curve.
VARSITY ANGELS TAKE OUT WOMEN'S CLUB COMPETITION 9 May, 2007
In a repeat of their 2005 efforts the Varsity Angels won the Grand final on March 10th, after wrapping up the league title with one game to spare. In what was a closely contested final, the Angels outscored the young Harbour Hawks side (the Hawklings) 14-11 in one of the best club lacrosse games seen in the competition to date. The Hawklings, consisting of many of the New Zealand Under19 team players due to compete in the World Cup later this year, showed how far they have come over the last 12months under the guidance of the under19’s coaches Anne Henderson, Jess Evans and Phil Cowper “QUOTE??” However on the day the experienced Varsity Angels side proved to strong, running out to a 5 – 0 lead within the first 5 minutes of the game, which proved to much to pull back for the young runners up. In other results on the day, Westforce beat the Harbour Hawks to clinch third place, and College Rifles overcame the Varsity College Rifles combined team for Fifth. |
